Vermi Compost

"Worms prepare the ground in an excellent manner for the growth of... plants and for seedlings of all kinds. They periodically expose the mould to the air... They mingle the whole intimately together, like a gardener who prepares fine soil for his choicest plants. In this state it is well fitted to retain moisture and to absorb all soluble substances, as well as for the process of nitrification....The leaves which are dragged into the burrows as food ... partially digested, and saturated ... are commingled with much earth. This earth forms the dark coloured, rich humus" -- Charles Darwin

The activities of earthworms for recycling of organic matter became the focus of attention by scientific community in mid-1990s. This technique known as vermicomposting, uses earthworms to eat and break up the organic wastes.

Initially the vermin-composting technique used the surface living earthworms at a very small scale-mainly for management of kitchen wastes. Now good compost yielding earthworm species like Eisenia foetida, Perionyx excavatus and Eudrillius eugiene are using for commercial process of vermiculture. These species are fast breeders and eat organic matters actively to produce high nitrogen vermicompost. Read more at our 'do it yours' section, under the title Vermi composting.

The excreta of earth worm is known as Vermicast, which is a dark brown or black humus like coarse material, soft in feel and free from any foul smell, live weed seeds and other contaminations. Mucus type substance coated on each particle, which increases aeration in the soil, provides excellent water retention properties and improves the drainage in heavy soils. The vermicast contains Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria (cells/gm) 2.5 * 10 6 , Phosphate Solubilising Microbes, and Beneficial Fungi (spores incl.). Beneficial bacteria and fungi in vermicast introduce very high level of biological activities in the soil. Vermicast provides complete range of macro, secondary and micro nutrients.
